Notes on the Canadian Legislative Conference

Canadian IAFF locals wrapped up their 17th Annual Legislative Conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, April 28.  The very successful conference was attended by 135 delegates from IAFF locals across Canada.  The delegates were pleased to have both General President Schaitberger and General Secretary-Treasurer Miller in attendance at the opening session to set the tone for delivering a firm message to our federal politicians. The priority issue of a Public Safety Officer Compensation (PSOC) Benefit was well received.  Various motions from New Democratic Party (NDP) MPs have confirmed that the majority of the House supports the principles of the benefit.  It continues to be a challenge to have the ruling Conservatives turn that support into actions and introduce a Bill.  Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton addressed the delegates April 26 and both committed firm support to the benefit.  We continue to make progress and this week’s conference keeps this and the other issues in the forefront for Canadian politicians. Canadian IAFF members are also asking their federal government for a national office for fire service statistics, priority protection during an influenza pandemic, amendments to the National Building Code and independent third-party investigations of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths.
