EMS stripped from Endicott fire fighters

Endicott, NY fire fighters will no longer be responsible for emergency management services.

The city’s mayor has decided to strip EMS duties from fire fighters.

Paul Higgins, union president of Local 1280, says the mayor’s decision boils down to petty politics and is retaliation against the fire union.

You can read his statement before the City Council.

The decision will hurt fire fighters in the wallet. Some fire fighters pay will be cut by 53 cents per hour.

It is the IAFF’s position that emergency management service works best in the hands of trusted professionals: fire fighters. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again until these political leaders understand that public safety should come first.

Watch Higgins make his speech before the City Council.

While Endicott, NY is losing their EMS duties-the City of Berwyn, Illinois has just hired 14 new firefighter/paramedics. 12 new union positions were created when the City agreed to Berwyn FF Local 506 proposal to take over the EMS service and provide better service at a lower cost than the previous private EMS service offered.

Brothers and Sisters in Endicott, fight for your rights.  Find firefighter friendly candidates and back them up with $ and manpower on the street to walk for them. Get them elected and work with them.  You also have to realize they have to look out for the taxpayers first and foremost.

Keep fighting the good fight and looking out for the public.  It's been many years since I worked the street's of Endicott with UVES but I still know the value of Endicott Fire/EMS being there when the public is in need.
