Do It Yourself Government

Local municipalities can’t be expected to protect their communities on their own. The federal government must do its part in securing America’s borders when it comes to wildfires, floods, hurricanes and other disasters, says General President Harold Schaitberger.

General President Schaitberger discussed the Colorado wildfires and the role of government on MSNBC’s Ed Schultz show Tuesday night.
“It’s not just a local government responsibility – it is part of a whole network of providing protection and response to our citizens in times of natural and man-made disasters,” he said.

About 32,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes near Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Colorado has received support from the federal government. About 1,400 forest service workers and 500 federal fire fighters have all been on the frontlines to help Colorado’s local fire fighters.

As the wildfire rages on, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is proposing deep cuts to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and he is also opposed to the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants program, which has returned thousands of laid-off fire fighters to work.
