Fire service history is an area of interest for many, but what some may not know is that there are hobby groups out there that focus on specific aspects. Fire Service in Philately (FSIP) is a group of active and retired fire service professionals and fire buffs who research and collect stamps and other postage depicting fire apparatus and events.

FSIP President John Zaranek, a retired member of Buffalo, NY Local 282, says stamp collecting opens the door to discussions on several interesting historical topics. “Collections can include stamps or postcards honoring historic fires and various pieces of apparatus. Our group exchanges information about these items so that members can keep their collections current.”

The group was founded in New York City in 1976 and has since expanded across 10 countries. For more information, visit Fire Service in Philately on Facebook or email jczaranek@roadrunner.com.
