Who is Really Running Your Government?

Well the billionaire Koch Brothers couldn’t buy the 2012 presidential elections, so shutting down the federal government is the next best way to push their extreme policies on America.

The New York Times published an expose on the seeds of the federal government shutdown and reported the effort was a long planned, well-calculated and well-financed campaign to attack the Affordable Care Act which was signed into law in 2010. The law is widely viewed as the most historic overhaul of the US health care system since the inception of Medicare and Medicaid.

As a result of the federal shutdown, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will not announce fiscal year 2013 Assistance to Fire Fighters Grants (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grants which has put tens of thousands of fire fighters to work. In Atlantic City, New Jersey 51 fire fighters received pink slips because their salaries are supported by SAFER grants.

Charles and David Koch spent at least $200 million to influence the outcome of the 2012 presidential election.

And the millions keep coming in their latest attempt to have their way and undue democracy.

The Koch Brothers have reportedly given millions to groups like the Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce to fight the healthcare law and to pressure vulnerable law-makers.

The Koch Brothers are no friends to fire fighters.

The billionaire brothers are supporters of groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a shadowy organization that thrives on pushing anti-worker, anti-union legislation in statehouses across the country that hurt the wages and work place protection of workers.

Some of the Koch Brothers money has gone to support efforts like keeping Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in office after a recall attempt and to stripping collective bargaining rights away from Wisconsin workers in 2011.

This year alone at least 117 ALEC model bills that hurt wages and the rights of workers including “Right to Work” laws were introduced in 15 states.

Unfortunately, America is in era where we have a group of very powerful and rich individuals who want all of the riches and gold and will stop at nothing to destroy their political opponents.

The IAFF will continue to be on guard and keep our members updated on the issues that affect them. In the meantime, the IAFF has produced an informational tool that offers an overview of the Affordable Care Act and answers your question about how the law affects you and your family.
