The IAFF is very concerned about an Internet trend growing among teens setting themselves on fire and posting the acts on YouTube.
Several fire departments are seeing “Fire Challenge” cases where a young person voluntarily applies flammable liquid on the body and then sets themselves on fire. The act is filmed and posted to YouTube and Facebook.
One teenage boy in Buffalo, NY died from his injuries.
As fire fighters and paramedics, we know burn safety should be taken seriously.
We encourage our members to speak out against these dangerous acts because it can not only result in death but to life changing injuries.
Burns may lead to surgery and long hospital stays, permanent skin damage and scarring, chronic pain, damage to internal organs and more.
Please help those in your community make smart choices about how to be safe and how they can do life-long damage to themselves.
