Sen. Schumer Calls for National Fire Fighter Cancer Registry

Legislation to track cancer among fire fighters got a big boost when New York Sen. Charles Schumer announced he will introduce a bill in the United States Senate.

Schumer said before a group of New York state fire fighters, “{Fire fighters} risk their lives for our safety. That is a noble thing to do. We must exalt our fire fighters.”

Schumer in collaboration with Sen. Bob Menendez will introduce a bill to direct the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create a national fire fighter registry to provide data to help prevent and treat cancer.

For years, research has shown a link between fire-fighting and cancer. Fire fighters have always known the importance of documenting such incidents. The registry will be voluntary and data will be made available anonymously.

The legislation has already been proposed in the House of Representatives.
